A Male bear shot by Moo-ha-ting-wa at- Cathorst, southern end Ellef Ringnes Island, on Easter Sunday, April 23, 1916. He walked into camp when we were asleep. The boys crawled out of their sleeping bags, slipped on their hamibs, and went after him naked; temperature about Zero. B Male bear shot- by Arhlio on south coast of Axel Heiberg Island, May 1, 1916. USS TEXAS, % Postmaster New York City. July 3, 1917. Dear Dr. Hovey: It was a great relief to all of us to hear that everyone north was well and in good spirits. I look forward to seeing you soon and hearing all about this last long winter you were forced to spend up there. I waited at Godhavn for the Danmark but finally came down on the Godthaab. Fortunately I did as this last winter's work with the Fleet in the West Indies was indispensable to my preparation for the trying times we are having these months since the war began. British naval officers tell me that the German submarines are doing very serious damage and victory for the allies is still far off. I have hopes of getting across to active duty in the near future. Allen is in Washington on wireless work. I am married and have been on the Texas for nearly a year. Our destroyers and troops are already fighting and more are on the way. The whole country is in a frenzy of military activity. I hope to see you soon and know that you are well. You will receive great credit for the way you have stuck out two years wholly unprepared as you were. I am delighted to hear that you have succeeded in starting the seismograph.
