1994 M. Stanback M. Formicivorus MPHF HNNR 13 Apr 0635-0705. Spy. More chases - rather vigorous. Mostly down in the dead snag at the bottom of MPHF (the old LPHF granary), but I don't think its LPHF birds - they're sitting tight at the road. Perhaps its UPHF birds. I saw several birds retreating up to the top of the hill over toward the UPHF snags in the E ravine. What's going on? Finch effect? During a quiet time I saw a subtle mount in the trad tree. I watched the mountee for 5-10 min. Just sat around. J does census. B.M still gone. A Finch effect! Ambush! 14 Apr Roost watch. Still lots of chasing. Birds roosted in the 93 hole (a few) and in the double-door hole in the pain-in-ass tree (more than a few). Hmm 15 Apr 1430 I arrive to set blind for ambush 2-nite & find a bird in the trad hole! Back to truck for stuff (hole grown over). Return, open ... no eggs. Chips, but how old? I set blind. (15 Apr) I set ambushes at the higher of the 2 double door holes in the other tree - one at the trad hole. Very quiet 2-nite. ≥ 2 birds into double door, none (I think) into trad hole. We'll find out tomorrow. 16 Apr Ambush! Ugh. Ends up the hole is 4 Ft deep (+ I forgot the net bag). Managed to get 2 birds by hand (♂-♀), but the last one took forever (Joey went back & got the net bag - which caught the 3rd bird) I suppose there could've been more, but forget it.
