1993 M. Stanback 46 M. Formicivorus RANA 14 Apr Roost watch: I set an ambush on the nest. Kelly watched it (1 bird). I tried to keep a general eye out. 2 birds went into the forest, the rest were (it sounded like) together somewhere in the tree. I thought I saw 2 birds go low but I couldn't find a hole there afterwards. So... 1 bird... I decide not to ambush. Instead I'll try for a female tomorrow morning - they were in the hole non-stop today. 16 Apr 0845 I watch nest hole for 10 min. A ♂ sticks head cut! I wonder if there are more eggs? 27 Apr 1330 Climbed to weigh hatchlings & instead I find a dead NOBA ♂ and no eggs. When I arrived, however, a bird flushed suspiciously from the central part of the tree. I guess this dead fellow is the sick NOBA I saw on 7 April. But the NOBA ♂ on 14 Apr looked fine. Were there 2 NOBA ♂? I guess I'll find out. 1445-1515. Watched from truck. Birds eventually came in, but they showed no nestiness or mate- guarding whatsoever! I don't think I started a Fick effect since all 3 fems were pre-incubating. I looked for holes w birds after spying - nada. !?! Dead ♂: ch=145 tail=80, culm=33.0. No tail spots. Some Brown wing tips.
