1989 M. Stanback 3 Species Accounts HNHR 15 May 1445 Very large gopher snake in perennial grass clump at base of Haystack. No sign of surgical scar. I snipped triangles in 3 belly scales anterior to vent [illegible] 1512 Big healthy valley oak Falls at Laguna Conejo. 16 May Those weird poppies: UA2 (mariposa lillies?) 19 May pm 13 swifts Flew by (heading N) at Blm 1 24 May 0940 At lab. I noticed a scrub jay and a woodpecker interacting outside the lab window. I look out and see the jay killing a towhee chick. After several seconds the jay flew off with the baby, pursued by 2 Acu's Were they "protecting/mobbing" or trying to steal/eat the towhee. No adults in sight. 0700 (9?) skunk and 3 babies - horse ranch 26 May oBoo W. Flycatchers Fledge From Red House Porch (3) 1 Jun 3 tipulids in malaise trapnet. Matilla poppies blooming at Griffin's Blm pond pretty much dried up (hastened by cattle). The Few puddles remaining are Full of doomed tadpoles. 2 June 5 tipulids in net. Baby turkey: Y 4 June Egg #1 in W. Flycatcher nest on Red House Porch. 5 June 8 Phainopepla: CV road at FR5R. 6 June Though they're blooming, the buckeyes on Haystack are brown Egg #2. She's starting to incubate. (Total eggs) 13 June 5 tipulids lab cuail 16 June Young grosbeaks out 19 June Lane at 1800: Fawn (with mom) with Face that has been badly mauled. Whole left side of head a swollen mass. Snout is one big Scab.
