1988 M. Stanback 4 M. Formicivorus Volcan Irazu (17 Mar) then move to another acorn nearby. The bird pecked a hole in the acorn and looked to be eating it there, while it was still attacked. This explains why I never see birds carrying acorns, why I've seen no storage holes (though I'm still looking), why all the eaten acorns are under the tree, why the eaten acorns are generally not finished (no anvils - they must just eat til it breaks), and why all the activity is in this one tree (you can't eat it at your leisure) Birds seen flying off in several directions, including SW- Looking at the curve oak, I see that, though most of it has ripening acorns, some branches are Flowering and putting out new leaves. 18 Mar 0930 while watching the curve oak, I see a woodpecker- leaving with an acorn. It looked to be holding it like [illegible], probably by an edge it pecked through. 0940 Saw bird leave w acorn, to same destination I get the impression that, at any one time, there are many partially eaten acorns hanging on the tree. Birds peck at an acorn for several minutes, then move to another (or are chased from their original) They do seem to be eating, but I haven't seen a bird pull out a big chunk of acorn meat. The birds are not especially shy - they are willing to land and sit @ 10 m From me, 0955 I break open @ 10 acorns and set them together in the grass by the Fence. Will the birds come down?
