1988 M. Stanback M. Formicivorus Volcan Lrazu 16 Mar 0915 Around the ravine E of the hotel, I hear & see several birds (>2?) They karrit a lot, no few watas heard. There are acorns on the oaks 0940 Watched a ♀ fly to a Fence post, then fly to the ground to Forage (hopping around) For 35 sec. She Flew into a tree where she stayed @ 1 min, then she returned to the post, then the ground (same area) and Foraged in the grass for 1:40. She took small pecks in the grass - presumably after small prey items (no large prey items were observed taken). There are 4 or birds in this general area (within hearing range) I don't know how many groups. 1000 Found nest. I dub thee Ravine Group. Nest is @ 25 m high, diam nest ht 25 cm, dir 120° (no declination figured yet). A ♂ visited the hole (looked in) then moved up. Soon a ♀ did the same, ♂ left. Then another ♀ came out of the hole. Both the ♀♀ had light eyes and adult crowns, Cooperative breeding! Well, not breeding yet. I watched hole and saw ♀ removing chips - but it is a deep hole - I'll be watching for egg tossing. 1020 New group = Bluff. There are at least 8 birds here. An oak is currently dropping acorns on the inside of the road curve. Many (if not most) of them are so large and round that I doubt if the woodpeckers can carry them. Many are @ 1 inch in diameter.
