1989 M. Stanback M. Formicivorus A1 H N H R Dec 87 Acorn Count: 7000 1 April 0800 2 birds at 87 hole (8) 3rd came out soon after. 6 Apr 0845 Put up new string, then climbed. They've Filled much of this cavernous hole with acorns! Mustive done it in the Fall. Anyway, they're all sprouting - the birds are making a new entrance into the hole as well. This hole was just above the new "Floor" level, so I cleaned out some of the acorns so eggs wouldn't roll out. Not much of a laying surface. On the limb near the nest I Found white eggshell Fragments. 4(0)? Tossing? No birds in nest on arrival. 19 Apr 0730-0930 I break my own rule about cutting open holes early - I assumed they'd be Finished laying by 18 Apr. Well, maybe they were - there are 8 fresh cool eggs - but had I waited 'til late morning maybe there would be 10. It was a time consuming climb r cut. (And a not very waterproof one - I hope they survived 19 Apr) 27 Apr 0640 Driving by I see that the door has Fallen out and no one responded to my hello. Damn, I guess they Failed. No! 0830 I see a bird at the hole, I bite the bullet, Find the door, duct tape it up, climb the tree and replace it. They're hatching! One egg is gone, one infertile (removed) :: 8-1-1 = 6 viable eggs, 2 of which have hatched.
