1987 Ronald L. Grinnell Balanosphyra formicivora Hastings Reservation (7 Aug) time sapsucking in the dense live oaks on either side of CV carnal Valley Rd. near the CV canyon gate, which didn't help matters very much either. Good census, however: ♂837, ♀1042, ♂1081, ♂1079, ♀1284, ♂1285 all seen well, plus 4 surviving juveniles; 1430, 1432, 1433, 1434. No sign of ♂943, ♀1040, J1431. I suspect that all 3 are gone. 10:0930-1030 at Y and the Blomquist Knoll, a mini power-struggle in progress: Two ♂ from Hay-Blom, ♂1301 Red/6b-- BP.-whit(N)/wnt " setting up shop on the knoll with ♀1350 of Y (M/Blue walked together frequently, while exploring the old fallen knoll granary and the roosthole in the Blue Oak. This same sort of thing happened in fall of 1981 (see Knoll Set notes + T notes) At Y proper (in lociuts by lower barn) were ♀675 Grn-whit/M, ♂1150 Red-Blk/M, and J1428 M/mauve DBlue-whit(N)/ (All 3 took dog food from the feeder). No sign of ♂1376, who is probably gone. J1428 also "visited" the knoll birds briefly, but appeared to be chased by the Hay-Blom ♂. 8 Aug Checked out the peripheral action at the A1 Power Struggle 0600-0800: At Big tree, 2A199 (♀505, ♀1319) wakaiing with 3 kout ♂ (♂1016, 1127, 1219). Over to toward Fanny Arnold, ♂834, ♂835, ♂1023 were very active, but no sign of the 3 ♀ helpers (1024, 1249, 1250), who may have dispersed.
