Aristida (cont.) The bases of this plant are distinctly perennial, with horn-corn-like circular offsets for the coming year. Dr. Hitchcock's key, this runs only to A. virgata, which it agrees with; also agreeing with Heurard's description and figure (pl. Ixxiii) except for the short callus (0.15 mm). Now, if at all, (except for the perennial base, does this differ from A. gracilis not to be called A. longespica? All the stipules characters are the same, and Heurard's illustrations, are nearly the same. In my plant, the middle awn is 1.5 cm. long; the erect lateral awns are 1.0 cm. p. 171 Heurard p. 171, A. longespica p. 176 A. virgata callus short, densely fibre callus with 3/4mm long, to 40 cm high to 1 m. high leaves less than 1 mm wide not over 2 mm. wide flowers nearly 5 mm long 6 to 7 mm. long. the lower 3-nerved 1-nerved, 2-flowered with additional side ears sear-like on back .. rper plumas + smooth .. central awn 5-15 mm. long 1.5-2 cm. long lateral mostly 3 mm. lateral up to 13 mm long. sometimes to 7. This collection of A. virgata is apparently the first from Texas. It is scarcely distinct from A. longespica. Described by Wood as A. gracilis var. virgate, Ann. Bot. & Bot., pt. 2:389 (1870). Not from Texas. In Hitchcock fig. 491 a to left over.
