P. foliosus is a common northern plant, showing also the narrow-leaved variety macella described recently from Fresh Pond. The achene fruit is not cochleate, has as well-marked toothed feel and straight beak. The group P. spirillus, P. capillaceus and P. diversifolius occupy scarcely overlapping territory; P. Spirillus [illegible] has coarse leaves and the cochleate fruit characteristic of the group. [That if P. foliosus (2)]; P. capillaceus, a cute floating leafs, and finally setaceous submered leaves; P. diversifolius is southern. Sept 10 (Thurs). To Slip salt marsh. Sanguisorba canadensis, Eupatorium maculatum, Helianthus giganteus Schizogyne reppea, S. altissima, S. semipervirens in flower; S. speciosa only in bud; Erchites triacifolia. Collected Spartina Michauxiana on dune sands and S. alterniflora at margin of the bay. Plant close to the bay, and exposed to moore are often only 1 ft. high (and flowering). Sept 11 (Friday). Examined Spartina in fresh herb at NY. S. Marilii appears to be only the large form of S. alterniflora (chaffy toward var. pilosa) and shows no trace of S. cynosuroides.
