228 Salvia Fundamental Structure 1) spikes with a single terminal flower, surrounded by & many-flowered spikelets (cf. Clarke, t. cxxiv and cxxv) as in Calptwarga and Hoffiie, which appear to originate from hypothecum, but are firstly reduced and condensed at that point (cf. Clarke, t. cxx vii (S. flaccida) where the 3 spikelets are 3 separate origin. 2) Carpets Achene wall 3-layered. a) membranous Tracheolate layer as in Eleutheris b) Silicified wall. c) Spiders' hairy hairs, etc. 3) Hypothecum. Repreents mostly a disc with reflexed margins; the inner reflexed surface bearing trichomes, etc.; in S. flaccida disc segments (3) ac not reflexed.
