1985 Mark Stanback M. formicivorus BLM 1 Hastings Reservation 21 May 1150 arrive. ♀ attentive at new hole (hole near ground, in small tree NE of granary) 1152 ♀ (same, lite bands on left) begins working on hole 1201 ♀ still working, ♀ ♂ appear near hole 1207 ♂ has brown rt shoulder, ♀ just sitting at hole 1212 ♀ begins work again, other birds no longer visible 1228 ♂ joins ♀ at nest — remains nearby, later leaves 1235 another ♀ comes to nest tree, then flycatches back to gran 1242 ♀ 809 leaves nest, returns to granary 1257 ♂ attentive near nest hole for @ 5 min 1331 3 birds (at least 1 a ♀) leave granary, fly toward new hole 1 stops 3/4 way to it, another stops in hole tree, third goes beyond and the same distance again to knoll 1338 ♀ w red on rite, lite color lower left tail in good condit Another ♀ seen minutes earlier — thought then to be 809 had tail end in poor condit, w only rachis showing 1347 ♀ w d blue? on rite, red ♂ M left has bad tail 1350 This ♀ flew toward BLM 2 and out of sight (from granary) 1353 good tail (Y+M? ♀) ♀ in granary 1355 bad tail ♀ (?) lands beside good tail; vocalizations crouching, bad tail flies NW 200 yds, sits, disappears 1402 492 identified in granary, good tail, brown rt shoulder 1418 good tail ♀ ♂ atop granary 809 1435 no defense by woodpeckers 6 starlings in granary tree, 2+ hover departed — end observations and land at cut hole on main trunks
