23 May
Near artificial granary between 1800 + Gate (Horsetail)
1500 Noticed woodpecker vocalizations (2 birds here)
1515 Twice a woodpecker has come down to gnarly
oak at stream crossing. Once bird flew back
NW with an acorn. Birds seem to be spending
time up at the edge of the chapparel. Stayed until
1535, but never was able to get a good enough
look at legs.
24 May
1405 heard some birds E of artificial granary. Heard
one bird in "granary"
1415 saw + heard bird S of "granary" by stream crossing
1430 saw ♂ + ♀ on snag SW at stream crossing. ♀ flew
to large oak just north of stream crossing. She
seemed to be after acorns. The ♂ flycaught some
also seemed to be working on an acorn at one point,
1448 sighted woodpeckers (2) in top of oak N of crossing.
Both flew SW toward gate
1700 Have been watching all this time. Found nest 1 in
broken off branch beside (N) concrete creek crossing. At
least (and probably just) 1 ♂ + 1 ♀ both unbanded.
Probably on eggs. Took turns (20 min) in nest,
Never carried food to nest. ♂ stuck head out more often
