1986 M Stanback M. formicivorus PIPE HNHR 6 April 0900: 2 birds flushed From granary 12 April 1530 Found nest. New hole in freshly broken snag - near top - about 12 Ft up. 13 April Cut open hole. A J was in the hole when I arrived. The hole is as yet incomplete - very rotten. I cut the hole thru a thin portion. I need to reinforce it with wire. [illegible] I also cut my Finger but good-ouch. 24 April 1030 I reinforced the hole w duct tape or wire. It was empty - looked like little work had been done since last time Birds are probably nesting in the aviary. I didn't see any in the upper holes - I did see a suspicious flush from slightly lower. 28 April 0715 3 birds here. 1-2 roosted in a hole where the birds flushed near the other day. Vocalizations - wouldn't let a third (?) bird in 29 April 0930 Cut open hole. 1 egg. 7 May 1000 3 eggs (they looked newish at a peeper-glance) 19 May 1400 There must be more than one breeding pair here (or maybe they lost the 1st clutch) - whatever - you learned your lesson - always mark eggs! There were 4 babies. They looked about 2 days old. One was tiny and dehydrated. I don't think it will make it. There were egg fragments, but no whole eggs - so I estimate clutch size as 4. String broke - new one 5ux - Fix next time 9 June 1000 Banded 3 babies
