Melanerpes formicivorus
Darks Hollow,
(5 May) has the unusual characteristic of garricking from
inside the hole), But 9695 made one quick wood
chip visit, ad 9696 looked in a couple of times,
Lots of open-wing waltas rsuch here, too.
6 May 0545-0700: Boesville, man! 8584 made one quick
trip to the hole, but the 99 neut-ern glared at it. Still
a lot of garricking, chattering, intrusions, + open-wing waltas
here. They seem to be having problems. Methinks I
will let them slide tomorrow
10 May Been letting these guys slide lately (though I watched [illegible]
on 8+9 May, continuing to see 8584 in the hole a lot
Starting here today 0600. 0700, still boring, 8584
spent a lot of time inside working on the hole, but novicits
by 99.
15 May Watched here today, 0545-0700. Confusing. Yesterday
Walter watched + reported The birds were going into a hole
on the high, horizontal dead stub in the nest tree.
Today, I see no interest in that hole, but some
token interest in the usual hole, plus the 82 nest
hole. Darks Hollow still has acorns, so I'm not
sure what the problem is here.
17 May 0545-0700, SOS. Some interest in the usual hole (including
one brief visit by a 9) and no interest in other holes.
19 May 0545-0915: Looking better. A mustached 8 (suspect 9696)
was looking out when I arrived, ad didn't leave until 0610 (after
going down a few times. Brief visits by 9696 + 8584, too.
Will have to watch here tomorrow
