Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
8 March Watching 1000-1030; Warm, sunny day, but no evidence of
any birds here yet.
9 March ** GROUP UPDATE **
① Juvs 923, 924, 925 NSHB 29 June 1983
② δ857 disappeared 1 July 1983 ± 2 weeks.
( present during spring granary crashes, absent summer;
see Philip's notes).
③ Low Hay (♀587, ♀524, ♂NBE18807, ♂858,
♂NBE18867, ♀J926) abandoned 18 Aug 1983 ± 3 weeks
Last seen (all birds) on 23 July. Absolutely
nobody seen in fall acorn survey 14 Sept, 12 Oct.
23 March Good news here! Low Hay is occupied by 3 banded birds.
They are: ① δ721 Yellow / Corn-yellow o.d.δ723
M/Dawn-
Dawn-(Pink(N)) / L Pink, both from Plague, and both
apparently forced out by δ521 in Dec..br! With
them is ♀ Dorn-(Pink(N)) / M , who I can't
find on the 83 field list. Will have to check
her out. Anyway, these 3 birds seem fairly well
established here. All 3 were in the granary when I
walked up at 1000, but I didn't co-firm ID's until
1120.
Hmm! My colorblindness strikes again! Only ♀
D Blue-Yellow(N) / Yellow
Eco square is the longest 9650
(Formerly of Blom!), Not absolutely sure, of course.
This will take another look.
27 March 1250, First watch here since artificial granary w/100
acorns installed on 25 March. 1330, Musical Chairs!
