1983 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation BRK/CB1-Red 6 Jan Walked up here, 0930. As I walk up, I see 9666 chase a 9NB mildly from the granary. The 9NB flew to a tree just 10 m from the granary, but 9666 did not pursue. However, 15 m later the 9NB returned to the granary, whereupon 9666 chased her again. This provides some insight into why a new 9 has not immigrated here. Looks like we could have inbreeding. Also a 9m/ was nearby during the above chases, and he showed no response 1130 Whoa in the granary together are 9666, unt/D6rn./Green and a 9NB! Maybe there is a new 9! 9666 took a brief peck and ukt at the 9NB, but then they sat peacefully together for a min before the 2 banded 99 flew off, and 9NB followed. At worst, it looked like a domestic squabble. Otherwise, very slow here. 9 252 confirmed, but that's all. will have to try again later, and see if this 9 is indeed in the group. 1200, 9NB is back, alone in the granary, looking very much at home. 17Jan ** GROUP UPDATE ** 1982 ① 9483 disappeared 10 May ± 1 week A 9 looking out of the nest 1May was probably her.
