Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 1
10 April Watched here, 0645-0730, saw no interest at all in
the hole, though checking it at 0745, found it deep & wide
with a good carpet of chips.
1100, routine grazy census after seeing a bird looking out
of the new hole. Complete census: 8486 294, 9269 9383
2578, 8579, 8580, 8672, 8804 all seem well.
Lots of traffic to & from the new hole, and [illegible]
8486 seems to be following 9269 with some consistency.
It should be soon!
11 April Watched the hole here, 0630-0745, no action.
12 April Watched the hole 0620-0800. 9269 made one
long trip at 0700-0725, at the end of which
she left the hole carrying a huge mouthful of sandust.
9383 made a shorter trip at 0745-0750 ad 0800-
0810. I checked the hole at 0820 and found it
substantially deeper (difficult even to mark the bottom
now) but empty. Hopefully, soon!
13 April Watched 0615-0755. Two brief "wood chip visits by
9269, one at 0640, one at 0750, and that was it.
I checked the hole at 0800, found it still empty.
14 April 0615-0755, one 5 min visit by 9269 (followed
by 8486) and that was it. Checked the hole at
0815, still empty, but looking ready!
15-16 April Watches 0615-0755. Some wood chip removal by 9383, but that's all.
18 April 0615-0755. 9383 was in when I arrived. Anice long
(0723-0733) visit by 9269 and 9383 (0734-0753), but
checking the nest at 0810, still no eggs
