1983 R.L. Munne
Melanerpes formicivorus
Westgate
23 march driving them down to the Valley Oak in front of the
Hullsey driveway. 0850, looking "cut + dried".
No intrudes around at all. Constant greeting open
wing wakas coming from the granary. 058, 0692,
and 5 9NB all seen well.
0900, actually 2 8NB and a 9 NB hanging around
by Maggies and the W end of corral field. They are no
threat, however, and appear to have given up.
5 April Ambushed this AM, caught 1 9 NB (now 985$)
and 0692.
** GROUP UPDATE **
① 9 599 removed 22 March 1983
② 5 9 NBS moved here 22 March 1983
20 May Opened new hole in lowestus, finding 4 eggs See
nestrecord.
June
21 May Very unpleasant finding here. Here with Philip to band
~1630, we find ① the fragile, thin piece I cut had
fallen out of the hole + was lying on the ground.
② The nest was empty, even though Philip had seen the
adults feeding you earlier this month. I suspect predation
but whether the piece falling out led to predation or the
predator knocked out the piece, we will never know.
Regardless, it is probably best to exclude Wgate from rep.
Success calculations.
29 June ** GROUP UPDATE **
① 9855 + 9856 Banded here 7 + 12 April, respectively
② 9854, 9856, 2 9NB Move to Gate 83041b.
