Melanerpes formicivorus
Westgate
22 March 83 Successful removal ambush here at 0520, as we net and remove $599 from the group. By 1000, Susan reports a full fledged power struggle going on.
1145, Moderate chaos. At least 12 intruders here, 11♀, 1♂. IDed participants include at least 3 UB♀ (on the periphery), ♀685, ♀785, ♀789, ♀791 (from Gate; ♀685 and ♀785 most conspicuous), ♂790 (from Gate; seen briefly by Pam), plus ♀687 and ♂798 (pink from ARF2, cooperating with another ♀NB (!))
At this moment, the 2 ARF2 sisters and the UB♀ appear to have the upper hand. They have control of the central graary area, and are warking with ♂58 and ♂692. The gate ♀♀, especially ♀685 + ♀785, are also in the graary, but more to the side, and appear to be being chased by ♂692. The remaining ♀NB appear very much peripheral. Light intermittent rain falling throughout.
♂692 of Wgate seems to be taking the main role in chasing ♀♀ around; One-legged ♂58 is mostly laying low.
1345, 2 hr later, things are changing:
① A cooperating group of 4 ♀NB have taken over the W side of the graary tree. They are also beginning to score points with ♂692 + ♂58. 1 hr ago, both ♂♂ would occasionally peck and give chase to those
