20 May Watching here again, 0700. Well, no interest in the
Lane hole today, but the birds were hanging
out a lot near the 1980 nest hole on the side
of School Hill. Mate guarding data on reverse.
(Complete census (excepting ♀676, who is certainly
gone)
23 May Overdue mate guarding watch here, 0800-0930. On
21 May, ~1800 hrs, I was up on the side of Buckeye
Hill, and saw 4 birds, 2 of which were ♂677
ad ♂622 What a shocker! It also
looked like at least 3 birds were in a "pack" so it seems
likely that the males "guarded" ♂601 all the way
up there! The birds were on the N side of the chaparal
patch, 100 m W of the Buckeye 1979 nest hole.
Today, the birds were again hanging around the
1980 nest hole upon School Hill. I never saw the
core 3 in the granary area at all, and I got precious
little mate-guarding data. Also, the birds are no
longer interested in the Log field-Cane hole. However,
when Joane checks the Log field gophers by flashlight
at night, the last 3 nights she has heard birds
harrit from the tree. So they may still be roosting
there, and the nighttime disturbance may be why they
are not interested in that hole anymore.
27 May I finally make it out here again at 0830, and find
① Mate guarding has stopped, + ② The birds
appear to be incubating a clutch in the 1979-1981
