Melanerpes formicivorus
1500
(8 March) above the granary! Starting to make a bit of sense, now.
It seems like the 2♀ helpers, 675 + 676, are trying
to chase out the breeding ♀, who is not related to the helpers.
But what good will that do then? They shouldn't be able
to breed here, given that ♂297, ♂622 Still here. Why?
Could 1500 become another Finch, ♀ plenty of ♀ but
no breeding ♀?
1205, ♂601 or ridge, Alar reports ♂675 lands near her,
no chase, but ♂601 did fly off.
2 April ♂601 back at Gate today. See Gate notes.
8 April Counted stores, 1230:
2° granary 125
Main Tree 1260
TOTAL 1385
Lorn/Yellow
17 April Lots of action here 0910: ① ♂601 m/ is
around, so she hasn't given up yet. However, she is still
restricted to the peripheral trees above the granary, and even
there she is being chased, apparently by ♂675 and perhaps
another ♂ as well (♂676). ♂622, ♂297, ♂677 also see-
well. Only ♂676 not so far confirmed.
② On 2 occasions I heard ♂297 give garricks, once
from the 1°g + once from the 2°g. In the 2° granary
I thought I saw the 2 older ♂♂ waking on a hole, near the
top, facing the 1° granary.
19 May Well, things looking up here: ♂601, after being at Gate
just a week or so ago, is now back + appears to
have patched things up with ♂675, the lone
