1982 R.C. Munne
Melanerpes formicivorus
1500
7 Jan Watching here 1430. Looks like birds may be harvesting acorns
still from the 1500 draw area. Anyway, complete census.
♂297, ♂622, ♀601, ♂675 ♂676, ♂677 all seen.
12 Jan ** GROUP UPDATE **
① J678 disappeared about 5 Sept ± 2 weeks
Last seen 20 Aug 1981 at Bloinquist, but missing from there
12 + 14 Sept and from 1500 14 sept and certainly gone
by 30 Sept.
9 Feb Counted stores, 1330:
2° Valley Oak 500
1° granary 1830
2330 TOTAL
Also took a sample of about 35 acorns from the
secondary granary. A lot of Blue Oak acorns, (one of few
groups with any, that I've seen), plus Valley & Live.
8 March Very strange happenings here, 1100. First, lots of intruders
and chasing: Alan had been watching at 1800 and reported
intruders there. Here we see 2♀ NB in the ☐ Sridge, above
the granary. We then get a full census (♂297, ♂622, ♀601,
♀675, 676, ♂677), but then we notice that ♀601 seems
to be getting chased by her own group member! She now seems
to be excluded from the granary, and is hanging out on the ridge
area. Once it appeared that ♀601 was being chased by a ♂ (!)
1145, Big Chase! 2 birds chase hell out of ♂601
for about 30 seconds, all over the territory. Don't know who, but
it was definitely NOT ♂297 or ♂622, as I had them in sight
1150, Alan reports ♂676 definitely chased ♀601 from the Knoll trees
