Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Knoll Set 4 March Things getting confusing here: Watched here late yesterday and saw only a 9NB i- the trees below the Y: Today, 0920-1000, a 9NB, 8561 Yellow-BLK/m 9715 LBlue-OBlue/yellow No sure sign of 8564 yot. Other birds, including 8660 of Plague. Roosting, some interesting observations of 9NB *→* stealing acorns out of the Y granary, after the Y birds had already roosted. See Y notes 6 March Successful ambush here in the same sycamore netting the second (unbanded) 9, now 9716 L Pnk/m Bkt-Red 8 March Beginning to look bad for 8564 here. Watching 0930, it takes a while, but 9715 LBlue-OBlue/yellow and 9716 L Pnk/m show up eventually in the Knoll Blue Oak. By 1030, still no sign of 8564. Alan is watching at 1800 right now to see if he's there 1035, further developments; 8669 of Y shows up in the Knolls Blue Oak 10 tree, and gives mild chases to the two 99, Hmm! Further evidence that 8564 is indeed gone. Could 8669 be contemplating polygyny (299 at Y, 2at knoll?) Will have to keep on top of things here. 10 March ** GROUP UPDATE ** (Time to admit defeat) 8564, 99 856, 857 all found Knoll Set as adults 1 November 1981: 8564 first noted here 17 Oct, though things weren't settled until 20 Nov 9856 presumed banded 9715, 29 Jan 1982 9857 "" "" 9716 6 March 1982 8564 disappeared 25 Feb 1982 ± 1 week
