1982 R.L. Munne Melanerpes formicivorus Y 10 May Watching here, 0645-0830. ♂669, ♀714, ♀NB all here. I didn't see ♀668 today, but I did see her on 7 May (though I shamefully did not write it down), working briefly on the new V0 hole. Today, I saw no interest in any holes, although the weather (overcast, cool) might have had something to do with it. When I first walked up to Y, and at about 0730 again, too, I saw ♂669 and a ♀ up by the Still ravine, in the big Valley Oaks that contains a hole. I didn't see anybody in or at the hole, but it merits further attention. Also, the Y birds still have acorns (saw a few being moved around and eaten), but I will give them a few more, to hopefully encourage them to nest. 13 May watching 0610-0740. Starting to get frustrated. Only 2 birds seen all morning, ♀NB and ♂669. Both ♀714 and ♀668 conspicuously absent, although there were some conspicuous ♀NB intruders around. Absolutely no interest in any holes, that I could see anyway. The 2 birds were almost always in the granary or on the knoll. Also, ♂669 seems a bit displeased with ♀NB, karritting and very mildly supplanting her around the granary. They may at rock bottom acorn-wise, so I put ~20 mixed lobata + agrifolia acorns in the trunk of the granary. I'm starting to lose faith in the hope that Y will nest. 15 May 0920, Things getting worse. I come up and hear nearly co-stant garricking by ♂669. There
