1982 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Y (25 Jan) good to get them banded. The Knoll Set birds do "own" the sycamore below the Y. One knoll-setter is garricising occasionally, It might be 8564, or perhaps a NB intruder I thought that I saw earlier. Y proper, birds are still harvesting & storing Live Oak acorns, apparently from the late-ripening tree near the bridge just below the Griffins house. 8669, 9714, 9NB, 8402 all seen, but 9668 not yet confirmed. End 1120 30 Jan Successful ambush here at the same hole as 8 Jan, but all I come up with is 8669 & 9714. Both processed and released. 31 Jan Strolling down from S Hill, after seeing nobody there, I fi-d 5 birds in the trees right around the Y, 1710: 9668, 8669, 9714, 8402, 9NB. I don't know about 9668. She hasn't been seen at the Y granary in some time now. Also, at 1715 she clearly flew up to S Hill (to roost?). At least some birds were roosting in the 30 Jan ambush hole (!). 3 Mar I sneak some glances here while looking for Knoll Setters, and pull off a complete census, 1600: 9668, 8669, 9714, 9NB all seen well. 4 March Set up an ambush at the same hole as 8 Jan, then had an extremely successful roost watch. Y birds seemed to roost about 1800, including the 9NB and another bird in the ambushhole. Sitting near the Blonquist gate, Ether turned my attention to the Knoll Set birds, I found 9715 & 9NB in the Valley Oaks 20 m "upstream" from the
