1982 R.L. Marone
Melanerpes formicivorus
Plague
7 June Leslie has been looking for the fledglings the last
two days, and has seen only 2 of the 6. I go up
to check the nest hole at 1500, and find it empty!
So all 6 young must have fledged.
18 June ** GROUP UPDATE **
J722, 724, 725, 726 all not seen after banding
23 May 1982. Very clear now that only J721 +
J723 are still around
7 Aug for the last 2 weeks or so, 1 or more fledgling
Coopers Hawks have been very conspicuous here. Seems
like I hear alarm calls every few minutes.
16Aug Counted stores, 1600:
utility pole O
2° g 20
1° g 230
250 TOTAL
Also watched off on here, 1500-1700.
Complete census, so the coopers hawks haven't done
any damage: ♂473, ♂521, ♀494, ♀496, ♂660
Juv dom!
plus J721, 723 + 724. Plus I saw 3 dom
interactions! J723 pecked twice at J721 and
once at J724. Hopefully this will corroborate
Leslies hierarchy. Also, I'm pretty sure (not
totally positive) that J724 wnt-yellow/whr is
molting into ♀ plumage! As J721 + J723 appear
♂-like, they are probably ♂♂. Birds here seen
to be doing a bit of supsucking from the burkhouse
Live Oak.
