1982 R.L. Mumme 3 Melanerpes fornicivorus Poison Oak Hill (27 May) to a hole, and feed babies. What could be easier! Anyway, a nice easy hole in the Black Oak 20 M down the ridge from the granary. I had brought a short length of rope ladder up with me so I used it. In a pinch, the hole is probably accessible via webbing. Anyway, I saw it open, and [illegible] I am amazed to find 5 nestlings, perfect banding age (~20-21). I band them Juvs #748-752. By this time, it is getting late, so I will have to postpone (maybe cancel) PO #4 [Firn Ridge] and Low Post for another time. 15 Dec 1345, Walter +F climb up here, he sits a while to watch PO Hill #1 ± try PO Hill #2. 1415, nothing, I slip over to POY (FR) Q Mauve/Acr ? , plus at least 3 other birds at Firn Ridge, More may be banded. 1500, In between- FR and Low Post I see 2 banded ♂, 1 banded ♀, plus 1 ♀NB. Obviously, it will take some work here. Firn Ridge has few acorns: Probably a result of the fire, as the area around FR was badly burned. PO #1 + #2 are doing pretty well but I saw or heard no birds at #2.
