1982 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Poison Oak Hill (12 May) Unfortunately, I'm not sure I want to try getting up to it. Its about 50-60 feet up in a fire killed VO, and it would require at least the big rope ladder to get to. I'll have to think about it, the birds here, however, seen remarkably tame. Low Post -- A good # of acorns still in the Valley Oak back-granary, which is only 30 m or so below Post Flat. Further down, I walk down + find a beautiful mixed VO-BO woodland on a fairly flat area, and a possible nest hole (See map back of page 1). I flushed a woodpecker out of a hole (I think) in a large V-shaped Valley Oak, with a burned crotch. I think the bird came out of the higher (of course) of the two holes. A rope ladder will definitely be needed. Probably in the egg stage. Also, some 20 storage limbs (one substantial one in a Blue Oak) just below the main granary. Finch Ridge -- (Poison Oak Hill #4 of Walter) I find the granary here absolutely out of acorns, and nobody in any holes, including the hole in the VO granary that Walter opened in 1980. 27 May Walked up here on another nest hunt. First I stop in at Poison Oak Hill #1, climb up to the nest, and band the three nestlings. They are now Javs. 745, 746 + 747. On up to PO Hill #2, and I am extremely lucky! Just as I walk up I see a bird fly from the granary to the Black Oak (mentioned on 12 May), go
