1982 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Outer Planets (14 May) Altho real estate along the fence line, including several good Valley Oaks loaded with holes. I saw the "pack" fly all around the area, so I assume it is all one huge group. (?) Neptune -- a dead stub Valley Oak granary being outgrown by a madrone. Probably part of Jupiter, but I'm not positive. Acorns still present. Pluto -- Nice group based around 3 Valley Oaks along a nice flat downhill (through a beautiful Black Oak woodland) from Neptune. Lots of acorns, + lots of nice looking holes, but no nest. I will try here again 26 May Walkover here, 0930: First I visit Saturn to find 4 nice-looking babies. I band them, and they are now Juvs # 732-735! Plenty of acorns here still. I swing past Uranus, and flush a bird from the nest there, and I here plenty of begging. The babies have indeed hatched. and they sound ~ 5 days old or so. Acorns still present here, too. Then, down to Pluto at 1030, but I again strike out as far as finding a nest goes. Surely there must be one. Plenty of acorns + potential nest holes. Whoa, just as I'm walking up, I find a large VO with a couple of holes up right next to the fence (see map back of page 1), and I think I hear baby woodpecker noises coming from
