1982 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Outer Planets 14may Today I wander across to the far side of S Ravine to look for peripheral woodpecker nests. And these nests are about as peripheral as you can get. See the map on the back for details of where the groups are Saturn--without much effort at all, I find the nest here. It's a ridiculous hole, in a dead, paper thin stub of a Valley Oak 20m s of the gra-ary. I get it open and manage to patch it back together well enough, and found 4 healthy babies, 8-10 days old. I should band them no later than 26may The gra-ary, here, is a very nice live + dead Valley Oak, with lots of acorns still present (Cranus-- Didn't even know about this group until I got over here. A few acorns in a dead Bleached stub (very large, but short) and also some acorns in some dead limbs of a nearby live Valley Oak. Two birds flushed, but not any holes or nests found. Whoa, just as I'm leaving I flush a bird out of a nice hole in a Blue Oak. I climb up, open it, and find 3eggs fairly fresh (~3days) A pretty winpy group here, but good nonetheless to get the nest Jupiter This gra-ary is just off the reservation, which is unfortunate. It's truly one of the most impressive Valley Oak gra-aries I've ever seen. The nest is undoubtedly off too. Whoa, 1700 I see a terrific pack of 3! Serious mateguarding, so I guess they haven't nested yet. Jupiter seems to own a huge chunk of
