Melanerpes formicivorus
Bianca
18 Aug Tried to watch here 1700-1830, but very confusing.
For sure I saw 2 ♀NB and 1 ♂NB, and I think
all three of them belonged to each other. I saw no
Bianca babies however, and it seems quite likely that
all are gone. However, I also saw a Juv NB that
seemed to be molting into ♀ plumage (where did she come
from) that wasn't really being chased around by what
I perceived to be the pitti residents. All these birds were
hanging around both sides of Bianca ravine, near the "head".
To make matters more confusing, Black Oak birds were getting
mixed up with everybody, too.
23 Aug ** GROUP UPDATE **
① One ♂NB (♂869) disappeared ~ 20 Jan ±6 weeks
Present at Bianca 3 Dec, missing 9 March.
4 Oct Very strange happenings here, 3-4 Oct. At 0730 on
3 Oct, while Bill (Carmen + I) were doing the Acorn count,
I heard a woodpecker tapping from inside a hole in the
Bianca VO "nest" tree (from years ago). We determined
that was the bird was in an old opened hole, that seemed
to be blocked from inside by a piece of wood. I returned
at 1730, just before dark, climbed the tree, and found
the hole completely blocked (from inside) by a piece of wood.
I pushed the piece into the hole and looked in with
the flex life, and immediately saw a ♂ Acorn woodpecker
looking at me. I tried to saw him out, but it got
quite dark, so I put a couple of nails over the hole
