Melanerpes fornicivorus
Upper Arnold 2
9 April Counted stores, 1500 hrs:
"2" granary 1050
"1" granary 1100
TOTAL 2150
While counted, ♂681 or/yellow showed up, chasing
a rather persistent Nuthatch, and then, in the big VD
E of the main granary area, I saw 2 ♀♀, at least one
of which was unbanded. Not what I wanted to see,
given all the unbanded birds up here. Not absolutely
certain if the ♀♀ really belonged here. Unfortunately, it
started to rain, so I couldn't hang around.
2 May Walking up here at 1000 with Alan, we find a ♂
looking out of the upper opened hole in the Blue Oak
nest tree. Climbing up later at 1215, I find 5 eggs
about 5-6 days old, perhaps, I would guess hatching
may occur about 9 May, and barring improved
information around that date, banding around 31 May.
Also, the facts that ① Clutch is small ② Nest is
relatively early ③ Eggs are nearly all the same size
④ All indicate that there are probably not two new
♀NB here, but we will have to watch the nest
some to find out for sure.
14 May Checked nest: 1420: 4 nice-looking nestlings, with
no sign of a 5th egg: Young about 5-6 days old.
31 May Banded-bled 4 nestlings, Juns # 778-781. See
nest + capture records.
