1982 R.L. Mumme 4 Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert (9 March) wander around looking for birds, F get the same results he had: 2 or 3 ♀NB, ♂546 L6m-DBlue M and ♂689 M/orange. Where have all the other ♂ gone? It makes no sense that they would have gone back to Black Oak. Have they moved elsewhere with ♀652? Or have they all been nailed by something (perhaps together at a roost hole)? Doesn't make a lot of sense, I'll have to admit For added confusion, I saw ♂689 peck at one of the ♀NB, rather hard. So we may not have 3 ♀♀ here, come April. Also, wandering around NW of the Lambert granary F come across Bar-B-Q, first time I'd ever seen that granary. It had acorns and, what's more, I believe I saw one of the Lambert birds fly there and get an acorn. Could it be a Lambert adjunct? If so, that screws up my acorn counts. As always, more questions than answers about the Arnold. Will have to try, try again. * 10 March GROUP UPDATE *** (Leaving ♂624, 691, 545 for now) ♀652 forced to leave group 820222 ± 1 day See- losing the power-struggle there on 20 Feb, gone by 23 Feb. ♀860, 861 862 immigrate to Lambert 22 Feb 1982 ± 1 day 3 cooperating ♀♀ seen winning the power-struggle 20 Feb. En complete control by 820223 ♂546, 689 move to Lambert 824@ 1 March 1982 ± 1 weeks, Seen participating in PS 20 Feb, not seen there 23 Feb, but comfortably in by 9 March.
