Melanerpes formicivorus

(27June) A couple of interesting points: ① This nest
certainly overlapped with the first nest (at least
by a few days), which no doubt explains the
unusual nest site choice. Other than the "traditional"
nesthole, I would infer that this group has few (if any)
viable bbikes alternatives that are in or close to the
granary
② I think it might be a good generalization that
woodpeckers wont Overlap nests unless they have a lot of
helpers (as both BO + Al do this year). The helpers
are needed to finish up the first nest while the
adults get going on the second. Also, both Al & BO are
still very well supplied with acorns.
5July Banded two young here, 0800, after opening the
nest (not as hard as I thought). The nestlings were
extremely thin and poorly nourished. By feather
growth, they were at least 20-21 days old,
but they weighed only ~50grams! Very poor. See
Capture record for details. Also, I was unable to
git a blood sample from either of them, Simply because
I couldn't find the wing vein! They were just too small.
Anyway, they were banded Juvs. 826 + 827
I almost forgot: At the bottom of the nest
was a rather Smelly 15-18 day old nestling that had
been dead for at least a few days. So there were
certainly 3 nestlings at one point, and probably three
when I peeped in 0~27 June
