Melanerpes formicivorus

14 May Nestcheck, 1210, using only the peeper because of
the fragile nature of the opened hole: 4 babies,
one of which was quite a bit smaller than the others.
9-10 days old seems like a pretty good guess, so
I should plan on banding 4 (or 3) on 26 May
18 May A short nest watch here, more to find out who the
hell is here rather than to get feeding data.
Anyway, I do well. It looks like 4 birds are
here, all banded! 639 yellow/D1Blue (not seen
since June of last year), 640 Dorn-Red (n)/m
appear to be the resident breeders, with 2
helpers from last years nest: 658
LBlue-B1K/CBlue, and 659 m/B1K-or. The RNB
of last year must certainly begone, and as must
638 as well. Lots of feeding, so nestlings
are probably doing quite well.
26 May Banded 4 healthy nestlings here today,
now juveniles # 736 - 739,
14 June Said "hello" to the nest hole, but nobody looked out,
meaning a 2nd nest isn't likely here at the moment
