1982 R.L. Muhme 4 Melanerpes formicivorus BlackOak (14 June) using carabineers, sticks, etc., but gave up after awhile. Also, the eggs have hatched already. I flushed a fledged juvenile and an adult from the nest as I walked up, and heard the peepings of what sounded like just-hatched nestlings. So much for getting egg measurements, and probably clutch size. I will have to try again in a few days. But this means that the two nests here certainly overlapped by at least a week or so. 18 June ** GROUP UPDATE ① 8689 + 8691 returned to Black Oak 20 March 1982 ± 2 weeks: 8689 was still present at Carbert 9 March, back at BO 18 April. 8691 only seen at Carbert in November then again on- 20 Feb 1982, but back at BO 18 April. 5 July Banded two very anemic young here, 0900. Now Juvs. 888 828 + 829. Though they are minimally 21 days old, they are way behind in size. (See capture records). On top of that, their blood was very thin (“iron poor”), and spun down to only a few red cells and a lot of plasma. I barely got enough for a decent sample 18 Aug Counted storks, 1630 Fallen Limb 550 Also good looks at Juvs Main Area 850 741, 742, 744, and OK 2° Area 20 look at J829, all sapsucking from -after, J828 and 8713 the "traditional" Live Oak sap tree, seen near Bianca-
