Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
26 April Looks like we have a nest here! At 1720 I find a
♀ (with heavily mustached right face) looking out of the
"bad hole" (1981 1st nest hole), in the Valley Oak.
I will have to open it up very soon.
27 April Open up the hole here, 1700: 5 eggs and it looks
like the clutch is certainly complete. I marked &
measured the eggs, My guess is that this was about
day 3 or 4 of incubation. Anticipate hatching
about 5 or 6 May, and banding about 28 May.
See next record for other details. Also, I would guess
that this is almost certainly the work of one
♀, and last year's 8-egg clutch probably was, too
(since ♀320 is still here).
26 May Banded 5 nestlings here today, a very good
effort for Black Oak. Juvs #740-744.
7 June Counted stores, 1730:
Fallen Limb 825
Main Area 1275
2° area 160
2260 TOTAL
12 June Walked up here 1500 + found a ♀ looking out
of the 1981 aborted 2nd nest hole, in the
poison oak covered Valley Oak in the 2° area.
Looks like we have a second nest here!
14 June 1800, I "try" to get up to check the new nest here,
but the string broke on me, and I didn't think to bring
a lead weight or new string to get a new line up.
I tried to throw the remains of the string up, But
