Melanerpes fornicivorus
Plague
(7 April) Watching in the afternoon briefly with the FA's,
it looks like ♀-guarding is breaking down somewhat.
Maybe resting is not so imminent.
8 April Another no-egg day. Molly watched the hole from
0615-0830, seeing only ♂496 fly in to remove wood
chips. Again, I watched the group. Again it
Seemed like ♀-guarding was disappearing, but my data
are of dubious value. At least 2 intruders were
hanging around persistently about 0800, but I could
never see who they were.
9 April 0635, I'm watching the new hole from a blind.
Zero! Except for a few Karrits behind me,
absolutely nothing.
10 April 0640, watching from Adobe Hill, looking at the
1981 hole brush ad the new hole. Leslie watching
from blind. These birds are starting to play games
with us. Leslie reports ♂496 + ♀521 look in, but
no action in the hole. Leslie also says a bit of action

the gravity, 0700-0800, and didn't see much of
anything. Certainly doesn't seem like any mate-guarding
is going on, no any interest in other holes
11 April Watching from Adobe, overlooking the new hole + last year's
hole, 0640. By 0810, NOTHING HAS HAPPENED.
A ♂ stumbled up this direction briefly, but that was
it.
1450, Watching from Lab Area, looking for
