4 May Watching from PO till 0630. Yesterday I watched from
the blind and saw 9383 remove woodchips from the new
Black-oak hole. Today, 9383 does it again, and 9269
looks into the '81 hole, but that's all.
6 May Watching from PO Hill while Alan watches from hide.
Looks like it should be soon. 9269 spent 20 min
in the 1981 nest hole, 0600-0620, and 9383 spent about
10 min, 0700-0710, I checked the hole at 0810,
no eggs. But it should be soon.
7 May It is soon. 1 egg laid today: Things are a bit confusing
as 9383 was in the '81 hole between about 0547 and
0605, and 9269 was in between about 0640 and 0705.
Checked the hole 0720 found 1 egg, 24.5 x 18.5.
I strongly suspect 9269, because ① 9383's visit to the
hole was a bit early for egg laying, while 9269's was
right on schedule ② Egg size definitely suggests 9269:
long oval, not nearly circular like 9383's usual eggs
Also, if 9383 laid first, I would have suspected 9269
to have thrown out the egg. She was also in the hole
for a few minutes at 0712, but did not leave the
egg. Alan is watching the hole right now to see
what 9383 does, so stay tuned. End 0750. See Alan's
Yeah! notes for details on egg-laying times.
1000 Good news! 9383 carried the egg out
about 0918, carried to the 1°g, then the 2°g where
it was eaten by 9383 9? 269, and ?672! See
Alan's notes for details.
