Melanerpes formicivorus
Road !
6 April 1120, Trying again from PO Hill. 1220, I'm becoming
convinced that these guys aren't going to lay in the next
few days, at least. 3486 is following 9269 everywhere,
as usual, but they never seem to go into any holes. Although
3486 pecked into the "new" hole, The rest of the time the
couple spent either in the granary or in several different
trees above the granary, near Valhalla.
11 April Watching from PO Hill 1000: As soon as I sit down,
I see a fairly regular stream of birds entering or
looking into the 1981 nesthole (not the new hole) in
the Black Oak. 9269 (escorted by 3486) entered at
least once, as did 9383. 9580 9578 - perhaps others
also "visited" (looked in). Looks like that could
be the choice of holes
12 April Alan watched here today and saw a couple of birds look at
the 81 hole, but nobody went in. Nonetheless, at 1445 I
climb up to the hole, change the nails, re-open, re-dap, etc.
13 April Watching holes from blind, 0620. A bit of guarding
data also recorded (see back). No interest in
the holes, other than 3486 & 9383 looking in briefly
each at 0745. End watch at 0800
16 April Watching from the open spot, 1610, looking to see how
hard granary Q-guarding data will be to come by.
Not too bad, is my guess. A bit of data on backs.
See reverse. Complete census except 9294
20 April 0610, watching nest hole from blind. 0745, Nothing.
0845, Now I'm upon PO Hill, trying to see it
