1982 R.C. Munro Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 22 Feb Slow granary watch here, 1055-1255. A few acorns stored, a bit of defense. Only ♀ 269, 383, ♂ 486, 577, 580, 672 seen. 24 Feb Moderately slow census here, but I did pull out a complete census. All the above birds, plus ♂ 214, ♂ 579, ♀ 578. Nothing really noteworthy, although ♀ 383 had me worried for a while; I didn't see her until late, unusual for her. 25 Feb Another granary watch, the final of the 6 planned. ♀ 269 was nearly always around today, but the other group members weren't particularly active. I'm still wondering if my presence disturbs some of these poor birds, especially ♂ 294. But it's too late now. I certainly don't seem to bother ♀ 269 et al. I missed ♀ 578, but otherwise a complete census. 28 March Counted stores, 1415: Main granary (VO) 1300 2° granary (sycamore) 1190 TOTAL 2490 Also, when I walked up a bird (♂ I believe) was looking out of the hole (in the Black Oak) just below last year's nest hole. Obviously it is in pretty good shape. I will have to check it out (+ open it) soon. While counting the 2° granary, I see ♀ 383, ♀ 269, ♀ 578, ♂ 579, ♂ 577, ♂ 580. Didn't see that ♂ 486 was hot on ♀ 269's tail yet, but I should watch here soon. 30 March Watching from PO Hill, 1020: 1130, Pretty slow. Trying to see if ♂ 486 is guarding ♀ 269 yet, but I wasn't able to convince myself
