Melanerpes formicivorus
Warp 5
4 March Walked up here with Alan to set up the blind to let Alan
watch here at a later date. Birds are doing OK, acorn wise.
28 April 1300, I find nobody looking out of either of the two
holes that I know about here. I flush 2 birds from
the Valley Oak granary-nest tree as I walk up. Still
plenty of acorns stored here (well, a fair number anyway).
16 May About 0900-1000 I wander all around here, check the
holes for birds looking out, watch the birds, and find
no nest. Seems like they should have one, even though
only about 50 acorns remain in the storage limbs.
18 May Trying the same thing here, from PO hill, 0800-0930.
Nothing! I'm starting to think Warp 5 just does not
have a nest. I didn't see any birds carrying food anywhere,
or flying to any holes that I knew about. However,
it seemed like there was a fair amount of internal
conflict in the group, one member occasionally being chased.
I saw 5 birds together at one time, so perhaps there
is a new ♀ that has displeased the 2 helper ♂♂?
I will have to take a blind up and watch from above
the granary to figure it out!
27 May Another look at the holes, 1145, Still nobody. I'll have
to let Alan try to watch here
17 June Watching from the blind up here, 0915. Alan has watched
here recently and has reported the absence of 9629,
Leading me to think that with 3 ♀ helpers here (Alan
has seen 702, 703, +704), Warp 5 may be suffering
from "Finch Syndrome"
