Melanerpes formicivorus
Buckeye
(4 June) right + slightly downhill of the granary. I even saw
one bird carry an acorn bit in that direction.
I once again walk over there, find nothing, but then pick up
3 or 4 birds on the far side of the Ravine, perched
in some trees there. This could have been where they
were flying. After watching the birds there for a while,
it again seemed that nothing was up. I walked over, found
no holes. So it seems unlikely that Buckeye has
a nest.
Once possibility is that the always elusive ♀483
has finally disappeared, although I see her so rarely it
would be hard to say. Perhaps she disappeared and
the 1st nest failed (or vice versa), and because of the
two ♀ helpers, no new ♀ has sensed the breeding
vacancy ("Finch syndrome"). Buckeye requires more
watching.
Only other thing of note was that ♀666 picked
Dominance! ♀664 hard once whilst the two birds were perched
together in the granary.
11 June Trying here again, 0915. Well, still looks like no
nest. Only ♂665, ♀664+666 seen, none
carrying food anywhere. This time the birds were
always flying off toward the south. Again I
checked all the holes I knew about, but found
nobody looking out anywhere
