5 Jan Bad news here. At about 1600 hrs (± 15 min), following
several days of rainy, stormy weather, the major multi-hole
granary branch came crashing down onto Martin Road
Joanne Daly alerted me, and I went down to survey
the damage. A large section (about 8-10 feet) was
still intact, and Joanne + I were able to prop it up
against the sycamore in such a way that it should
be usable to the birds. A few other odd branch fragments
were also propped up in the tree. Scattered on the
ground, however, were a large number of acorns (almost
entirely agrifolia) which Joanne + I collected. I will
provide an exact count of the acorns collected,
holes destroyed, and acorns "returned" to the tree
later.
6 Jan Counted acorns still in the fallen limb. About 615
in the limbs, most probably still usable to the birds, now that
I've propped them up.
In total, about 730: 650 acorns fell to the
ground that were not collected. I still need to count those
that Joanne + I collected
20 Jan Alan counted the acorns collected, and it was substantial
Live Oak: 690
Valley Oak 43
TOTAL 733
Meaning that the branch fall of 5 Jan cost these birds
about 1380 acorns and (presumably) a comparable
number of stores. 615 are still usable at the moment. 225
