1982 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Corral Viejo (14 June) tree (see map back of page 1). I flushed an adult from the hole, and heard begging noises that sounded like those of ~4 day old babies. I should check the nest here ~25 June. Also, there was a fledged juvie looking out of the hole below the nest, so some of the first nest nestlings are still alive. At CV#1, no evidence of a 2nd nest. At Blom 3, I find a [illegible] fledgling looking out of the hole just below the nest hole, but no sign otherwise of a second nest. 25 June Banded 3 Nestlings, now J813, 814 or 815 at the CV#2 nest. They were still quite young (eyes barely open, ~60 grams, ~15 days old or so), but were healthy, and with the CV#2 granary well-stocked with acorns, they should all make it without trouble. 7 Oct Walking toward CV Grande from Gazebo, I find several CV Grande birds in the big old Valley Oak midway, along the road. Best sighting was ♂718 LBlue/Bk-white, formerly of Blom 2. Certain now that CV Grande is his natal territory. Also two juvs, both apparently molting to ♀ plumage (P812 DBlue/Bk-LPar and P809 M/Yellow-Blue) and two adult ♀NB, as well. 8 Dec Greatambush [illegible] Catching 7 birds all in the 1982 CV Grande nest hole: J♀808, J♀809, J♀812, ♂718, plus newly banded ♂836, ♂837, ♀838. Probably at least 1 ♀NB still in the group, however.
