1982 R.L. Mumme 7 Melanerpes formicivorus Dark Hollow 18 June ** GROUP UPDATE ** ① 9509 disappeared 24 April 1982 ± 2 weeks Last seen here for sure on 3 March, but probably here on 8 April. Not certainly gone until 13 May ② 9695 & 9696 moved here from 1800 12 May 1982 (see 1800 notes) 23 June Checked the nest, 1315: 4 healthy nestlings, (from eegs ①-④), but the runt has disappeared. See Nest record. 3 July Banded the young here, 1800, and got a mild surprise. Only 3 nestlings! What's more, it was the largest of the ④ 4 from 23 June that disappeared. Very strange. However, I bet that the missing juvie fell out of the nest. It's very shallow nest hole here, and the entrance points down, so that's not at all an unreasonable suggestion. Especially after what happened at Black Oak last year No trace of nestling below the and R1 + 1500 this year. nest, however. Anyway, the remaining three were banded Juvs. 823- 825! 17 Aug A quick but successful watch here, 0800. ⑤ 584, Dark Hollow is 9695 9696 all seen quite well! Also J82-3 Dbrn / wht - Dbrn and J824 "" " / DBlue, No Sign of J825, and I saw only 5 birds total (for sure), so it seems likely that J825 is gone. Also got a hint that J824 is dominant over J823 (the latter Gave ground as J824 hitched down a branch) but not sure. Birds were harvesting green acorns from across "theravie," Blor 3
