Melanerpes formicivorus
Dark Hollow
1 June I finally get lucky here By 0650, only
one egg had been laid, Certainly by 9695!
⑤ 25.9 x 19.7 . It totally lacked an air
cell, and had the same heavily marbled appearance
as the runt of 29 May. I presume either
9696 is through laying, or her last egg will
come in later today. Egg-laying details on backs.
Thus, because of the consistent differences in
eggs, I think we can fairly comfortably conclude
that ① 9696 laid runt or 28 May (tossed
by 9695), + ② 9696 laid normal egg, 9695 laid
runt, on 29 May (both tossed by 9695). Ah,
success!
2 June Checked the hole here, 0600. 6 eggs, The new
one (certainly laid yesterday by 9696 given the early
hour) was ⑥ 26.0 x 19.0, with an off-center air
cell.' Just as I hoped. Thus, it is certain that
9696 laid late yesterday, and ⑥ was almost surely her
last egg. 9695 may lay one more today, but I
suspect that this will be the last day. Thus, 13 June
would be a good date to expect hatching, and 5 July
for banding
4 June One last hole check 1545. 7 eggs, the seventh
probably laid late 2 June by 9695, 25.9 x 18.9.
again lacked an air cell. Actually, all the eggs that
lacked the cell when laid were beginning to develop then
now. Anyway, clutch complete 2 June, 4-3 in favor of 9695
