Melanerpes formicivorus
Dark Hollow
(29 May) very heavily "marbled" appeared (heavily streaked). no air cell
② was normal 25.2 x 19.2, off-center air cell.
I think it's safe to conclude that the Q that laid yesterday's runt laid today's normal egg, since as far as we know, runts are only laid as the first egg of a clutch. Also, yesterday's + today's runts were quite different, size-wise. But who laid which?
No way to know.
→ Alan + Molly watching here, 0735, Alan reports
⑥695 throws out both eggs at 1015. See Alan's notes
30 May Watching here 0548. Egg laying details on back.
Basically, 2 eggs were laid simultaneously by the two QQ between 0615 + 0655. At 0700 I checked the nest + found 2 eggs. ① 25.0 x 19.2 (no air cell) ② 24.8 x 19.9 (off-center air cell)
Also, the two eggs were absolutely side-by-side.
End 0730
31 May Watching 0605. Details on back. Basically, the 2 QQ once again laid simultaneously; and once again, the eggs have consistent differences
③ 25.9 x 19.5, (no air cell at all) ④ 24.5 x 19.7 (off-center air cell.) If I can ever reliably determine the ownership of just one egg, I should be able to figure out what happened here. Maybe tomorrow I'll get lucky.
