1982 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Dark Hollow 26 May Watching, 0540 - 0700. More quick visits by all 3 birds, but nothing substantial 28 May Watching here 0540 after shamefully skipping yesterday. 0608 ♀696 enters hole. Looks out for a few seconds at 0613 + 0615. 0619, ♂695 enters. 0620, ♀696 leaves nest ♀695 does not leave nest hole until 0657. 0700, I check the hole + find Egg, a runt, 20.5 x 15.3! Unfortunately, both ♂♀ were in the hole simultaneously while it was being laid. The runt had an off-center air cell, but it is not possible to say for sure who laid this egg. I suspect ♀695, since she stayed in the hole longer 0800, watching again: 0918 ♀696 enters: 0920 ♀696 leaves, without egg. 0920, ♂695 enters. 0921, ♀695 leaves nest, carrying the runt egg! Egg is carried to the high branches of the adjacent Valley Oak, but I lose track of it there. Unfortunately, there is no way to say for sure what happened here, other than somebody laid a runt egg, and ♀695 carried it out. Maybe we'll be able to figure out some of the details tomorrow 29 May Watching the nest here 0525 with Molly. See the back of this page for the details. Basically, both ♂♀ were again in the nest simultaneously when two eggs were laid, ⓐ was a runt: 18.7 x 14.7
